Treatment of gastric ulcers in horses is so important. If a horse has gastric ulcers, they must be medically treated.
Two drugs of choice, omeprazole and ranitidine. These drugs reduce/stop gastric acid production and create an environment in the stomach where healing can take place.
Omeprazole appears to be the most effective.
Length of treatment is important. For gastric ulcers in the upper part of the stomach a treatment period of 28 days may be sufficient. For ulcers in the lower region of the stomach longer treatment periods may be needed.
Timing of treatment may also be important. Treat your horse 1 to 2 hours prior to exercise.
